Former Kansas Soccer Player a Finalist for John McLendon Postgraduate Scholarship

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Stephanie Baugh, a former women’s soccer player at the University of Kansas, is one of 11 finalists for the 2011-12 John McLendon Postgraduate Scholarship it was announced Wednesday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Five John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards, worth $10,000 each, are presented to senior-level minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. The winners will be announced near the end of July.
The awards are named for Hiawatha, Kan., native John McLendon, a groundbreaking African-American basketball coach who graduated from the University of Kansas, studying under his mentor, James Naismith. McLendon was a major contributor to the development of modern basketball. He coached at both the collegiate and professional levels. McLendon was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 1978 in which he was the first African-American college coach to be honored.
McLendon finished his 25-year professional coaching career with a final record of 523-165 (.760). He also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1972 and remained a scout for the Olympic and Pan American Games until 1976. He was known as a coach that never raised his voice and never used profanity and in his 34 years of coaching, as he never received a technical foul.
Baugh, an Academic All-Big 12 First Team member, was a goalkeeper on the KU women’s soccer team from 2007-08 after transferring from West Virginia. She appeared in eight games during her senior season, recording 17 saves, while allowing just three goals. Baugh is currently an administrative intern for the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA).
Prior to joining NACWAA, Baugh served as the Assistant General Manager and Football Operations Coordinator for the West Texas Roughnecks Professional Indoor Football Team. She also completed an internship with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, managing the 2009 WBCA National Convention in St. Louis.
