Marciel Named to Ping! Freshman All-America Team

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas pitcher Wally Marciel has been named to the Freshman All-America Second Team by Ping!Baseball. Marciel, a 6-foot-2 pitcher from Kailua, Hawaii, went 5-3 with a 3.94 ERA in 59.1 innings this season.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The freshman lefty allowed just 18 walks and struck out 47 in his first collegiate season. Marciel enjoyed the most success in the second half of the season. After April 1, the 6-foot-2 southpaw went 3-1 with a 1.78 ERA and 26 strikeouts in his final 35.1 innings. In his only loss, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

Marciel was one of 12 pitchers selected to the All-Freshman Second Team. North Carolina’s Dustin Ackley was named the Freshman Player of the Year, while Vanderbilt’s Mike Minor was named the Freshman Pitcher of the Year.
