Jayhawks' Third Baseman Thompson Nets Three More Awards

June 11, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas sophomore Tony Thompson has been honored with three more awards this week, including selection to two All-America teams.

The Kansas third baseman was named a Third Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) on Wednesday, while on Thursday he garnered First Team All-Midwest Region honors by the American Baseball Coaches’ Association (ABCA) as well as Second Team All-America recognition by Ping! Baseball.

These awards continue a busy off-season for Thompson, the likely winner of the Big 12 Triple Crown. He had previously been named First Team All-Big 12 as well as a Third Team All-American by Louisville Slugger.

Thompson, a sophomore from Reno, Nev., enjoyed a break out season in 2009. He leads the Big 12 in batting average (.389), hits (96), home runs (21), doubles (27), RBIs (82), total bases (186), and slugging percentage (.753). The sophomore set KU’s single season records in homers and total bases.

Thompson’s bat led the Jayhawks to a school-best 15-12 record in Big 12 play, and a fifth-place finish. He carried the team in the postseason, batting .586 in seven games combined at the Big 12 Championship and in the NCAA Tournament, with five doubles, three homers and eight RBIs. He was also named to all-tournament teams in both cases.

He becomes the first Jayhawk to be named to multiple All-America squads since 2006, when Don Czyz garnered national honors from three publications.
