Anderson, Horton, Manning Earn All-America Honors
June 14, 2008
DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Crystal Manning and junior Nickesha Anderson each set team history in earning All-America honors for the second time at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday. Junior Stephanie Horton finished as an All-American in the women’s shot put for the University of Kansas as the Kansas men finished in a tie for 38th with the women placing in a tie for 15th – their highest NCAA finish in team history.
Anderson garnered her second All-America honor in the 200 meters while Manning did so in the triple jump. Anderson previously claimed the distinction in the 100 meters on Friday and Manning was an All-American honoree in the long jump on Thursday. Prior to these championships, Candace Mason was the only female to ever earn outdoor All-America honors in two individual events in a single year (1999 pole vault and heptathlon).
“Nickesha made a huge difference for us this year,” head coach Stanley Redwine said. “She brought a lot of leadership and had a great year and made everyone else believe that they could do it, too.”
In the final field event of the championships, Manning entered the triple jump finals in seventh-place with her best jump at 13.40 meters (43 feet, 11¾ inches). That jump stood up as her best and the Terrell, Texas, native placed seventh for her fourth career All-America award.
Horton nearly missed the finals, but her final preliminary toss of 16.12 meters (52-10.75 ft.) moved her from 11th to sixth and would eventually place her seventh-place heading into the finals. That toss, which would have broken the school record had she not already raised the KU standard on Thursday, stood as her best of the day for an eighth-place finish. The last Kansas All-American in the event was Denise Buchanan in 1987.
The 2008 Kansas women’s team left their mark as one of the best squads in school history. At each postseason meet in which they competed, they finished higher than any other women’s team in KU history. Their previous best at the NCAA Outdoor Championships was a tie for 24th in 1999.
“We have had good leadership from top to bottom this year,” head coach Stanley Redwine said. “All of the coaches did a great job with all of our athletes. I’m really proud of all their efforts.”
This marks the final meet of the season for many Jayhawks, though several will be heading to Eugene, Ore. for the U.S. Olympic Trials June 27-July 6. Be sure to log on to www.kuathletics.com for all Jayhawk news and information from the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
