June 22, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. – KU football staff member Lee Fobbs and former KU basketball All-American Wayne Simien will visit Liberal on Friday, June 25, highlighting the next stop on the five-state 2010 Jayhawk Summer Tour.

The event – a golf outing and dinner at the Liberal Country Club – will start at 11:30 a.m. More information on the event may be found by visiting the KU Alumni Chapter page at

All Jayhawk alumni, fans and friends are invited to the event. Fans can pick up 2010 commemorative football items, and have a chance to win autographed merchandise and Jayhawk apparel.

Fobbs has joined new football coach Turner Gill’s staff as Director of High School Relations/Player Development. He brings more than 30 years of coaching experience with him; most recently he served as the head coach at North Carolina A&T from 2006-08. He has been an assistant at Tulane, LSU, Southern Mississippi, Minnesota, Baylor, Alabama and Texas A&M, and also spent 14 years as a successful high school coach. A standout running back under legendary head coach Eddie Robinson at Grambling State, Fobbs played professionally in the Canadian Football League and United States Football League.

Simien was the 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year and was named All-Big 12 First Team in 2004 and 2005. The Leavenworth, Kan., native was the 2005 Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award winner. Simien was drafted in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Miami Heat. In his rookie season the Heat won the NBA title.

Former KU basketball star Bud Stallworth will also attend, as will Kyle Keller of the men’s basketball staff, as well as other staff members from Kansas Athletics and the KU Alumni Association.

“The KU Alumni Association has spent considerable energy building powerful Jayhawk chapters throughout Kansas, the nation and the world,” said Kevin Corbett, president of the KU Alumni Association. “The Jayhawk Summer Tour will be yet another example of our unwavering commitment to engage alumni and friends to strengthen the University of Kansas.”

The Jayhawk Summer Tour is a collaboration between Kansas Athletics and the KU Alumni Association, who have partnered to bring the University of Kansas to Jayhawk fans across Kansas and a five-state area.

“We have wonderful fans who often travel a great distance to Lawrence to watch games and visit the University,” KU Athletics Director Lew Perkins said. “The Jayhawk Tour provides us an opportunity to reach out to those fans and bring the University of Kansas and Kansas Athletics to them.”
