Powers Advances In U.S. Amateur Public Links Match Play

ERIN, Wis. – Kansas golfer Emily Powers advanced to the second round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship on Wednesday.

Powers, a junior-to-be at KU, defeated Megan Dowdy of Leander, Texas 4&3 in the first round. Powers, who is from Quincy, Ill., won the first three holes before Dowdy battled back to square the match after nine holes.

Powers then won the 10th hole before the players tied the 11th hole. Powers moved to three up after winning the 12th and 13th holes. She closed out the match after taking the 15th hole.

Powers entered the match play as the 52nd-ranked player in the 64-player field. Dowdy was ranked 13th. Powers will meet 20th-ranked Kristen Schelling of Mesa Ariz. on Thursday morning. The winner will advance to the afternoon’s third round.

Powers qualified for the match play competition after completing the two-round stroke-play with a 158 total earlier this week. Powers shot 76-82 to make the field.

The tournament is taking place at the Erin Hills Golf Course, which measures 6,158 yards and plays to a par of 73.

The tournament will continue with the second and third rounds on Thursday. Quarterfinal and semifinal action will take place on Friday with the 36-hole championship on Saturday.
