Powers Bows Out Of Public Links In Round Of 16

ERIN, Wis. – Kansas women’s golfer Emily Powers reached the round of 16 before bowing out at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links on Thursday. Powers, a junior-to-be, dropped a 3&2 match against fourth-seeded Lauren Doughtie (pronounced Do-dee) of Suffolk, Va. Thursday afternoon.

Powers, the 52nd-seeded player in the 64-player field, battled hard in the match, which was tied through seven holes. Doughtie won the eighth and ninth holes to go two up. She then won the 11th hole to go three up. Powers tied her on the next two holes before dropping the 14th hole to trail by four holes with four left.

Powers won the 15th hole with a birdie three to cut the margin to three down with three holes left. When the players tied the 16th hole the match was over.

Doughtie was North Carolina State’s top player this season and was ranked 54th in the country by Golfstat.

Earlier in the day, Powers won her second round match by defeating 20th-seeded Kristen Schelling of Mesa, Ariz. 6&5. Powers lost only one hole in the match and was five holes up after the front nine. She closed Schelling out with a half on the 13th hole.

The tournament is being played at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.

Powers will continue her summer play next week at the prestigious U.S. Women’s Open at the Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn., June 26-29.
