LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Another challenging schedule awaits the Jayhawks as nine games versus NCAA Tournament participants highlight the 2011 University of Kansas soccer schedule, released Monday by 12th-year head coach Mark Francis.

The season kicks off on Aug. 14 with a 1 p.m. contest versus Horizon League regular-season champion Butler in the first of 10 games scheduled at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex in Lawrence. After hosting the Bulldogs, KU will cap a three-match homestand hosting SEC schools Tennessee (Aug. 19) and Arkansas (Aug. 21).

Kansas will close out the month of August in San Diego, Calif., in the USD Tournament. On Aug. 26 the Jayhawks will face USC followed by San Diego on Aug. 28, both NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago. KU closes out its road stint at Missouri State on Sept. 2.

From there the Jayhawks make a quick stop at home on Sept. 4 to welcome South Dakota State before hitting the road again, this time traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Boilermaker Challenge. The weekend opens as Kansas takes on Dayton on Sept. 9, the 2010 Atlantic 10 Champion and NCAA Tournament team that fell to Final Four participant Ohio State in the second round. Two days later KU will play either Purdue or Cal State Northridge depending on the outcome of Friday’s games.

One of the biggest tests of the year will take place a week later when Kansas hosts perennial power Florida on Sept. 18. Last season, the Gators won the SEC regular season, conference tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

KU’s eight-game Big 12 Conference slate will kick off on Sept. 23 when it travels to defending conference tournament champion and Elite Eight team, Oklahoma State. The Jayhawks also travel to Big 12 foes Texas Tech (Oct. 14), Missouri (Oct. 21) and Iowa State (Oct. 23).

Before it heads into the heart of conference play, Kansas welcomes Oral Roberts on Sept. 25 in the first of four-straight matches at home. Play continues at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex as KU hosts its first Big 12 weekend welcoming NCAA Tournament teams Texas (Sept. 30) and last year’s regular-season conference champion Texas A&M (Oct. 2) before closing out the homestand on Oct. 7 against Baylor.

A four-match road stint then follows starting with a trip to Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament champion Creighton, another postseason participant, on Oct. 9. Trips to Texas Tech (Oct. 14), Missouri (Oct. 21) and Iowa State (Oct. 23) close out the Jayhawks’ regular-season road slate. Kansas returns to Lawrence for its home finale versus NCAA Tournament team Oklahoma on Oct. 28 for Senior Day.

The Big 12 Championship is scheduled for Nov. 2-6 in San Antonio, Texas.

Kansas returns 19 letterwinners, including seven starters, from its 2010 team that finished 6-13 overall.
