Jayhawks to Compete in USATF Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Three members of the University of Kansas track and field teams are off to Indianapolis, Ind., to compete in the 2006 USATF Championships, June 21-25. Senior thrower Sheldon Battle will participate in the 2006 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships while freshman sprinter Sha’Ray Butler and freshman thrower Stephanie Horton will compete in the 2006 Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Both events will be hosted by IUPUI at the IU Michael A. Carrol Track and Soccer Stadium.

Battle, fresh off his All-American performance in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, will compete in the men’s shot put on Friday, June 23, and the men’s discus throw on Sunday, June 25. A six-time All-American, Battle enters the event as the sixth-ranked competitor, and the highest ranked collegian.

Butler, a Lancaster, Texas, native will compete in the junior women’s 400m hurdles Thursday, June 22. She earned a qualifying invitation when she ran a 1:01.18 at the Tom Botts Invitational on April 15. If she qualifies, she will compete in the finals on Friday, June 23.

Horton, who earned All-Big 12 honors after finishing seventh in the shot put at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, will compete in both the junior women’s shot put and discus throw. She easily surpassed the qualifying mark in the shot put with a toss of 15.10 meters and also had a qualifying toss in the discus (46.52 meters) at the Mesa Classic on April 14. The shot put competition is slated for Thursday, June 22, and the discus is scheduled for Friday, June 23.
