KU's Powers Shoots 74 In U.S. Amateur Public Links

DEVENS, Mass. – Kansas senior-to-be Emily Powers fired a two-over par 74 in the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship on Monday.

Powers, a Quincy, Ill. product, is tied for 28th place after the first of two qualifying rounds. After Tuesday’s second round, the low 64 scorers will advance to match play beginning on Wednesday.

This is the third straight year Powers has competed in the U.S. Public Links Championship. Last year she advanced to the round of 16 before bowing out.

The tournament is taking place at the Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass. The course measures 6,287 yards and plays to a par of 72.

Lizette Salas jumped out to the first-round lead with a four-under par 68.
