Horton Captures Third at Junior Outdoor Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Freshman Stephanie Horton took third place in the shot put at the 2006 Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Horton’s third toss measured 14.79 meters (48-6 1/4) and capped off an impressive outdoor season for the Tigard, Ore., native.

After her first two tosses of 14.38 and 14.31 meters, Horton stood in fourth place. However, she managed to make her third attempt memorable, taking third place. Horton’s toss was 17 inches off her season best throw of 49-11 1/4, which she recorded at the Mesa Classic on April 14. Kamorean Hayes, competing unattached, and Jere Summers of Cal Northridge finished first and second respectively.

Horton, an All-Big 12 outdoor performer in the shot put, recorded a foul on all three of her attempts in the discus throw.

Two other Jayhawks also competed at the meet, hosted by IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind. Senior Sheldon Battle, a six-time All-American, recorded a foul on all three of his attempts in both the shot put and discus throws at the 2006 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Ian Waltz, competing for Nike, won the discus throw with a toss of of 64.52 meters (211-7 feet), while Adam Nelson, competing unattached, took the shot put competition with a throw of 22.04 meters (72-3 feet).

Freshman Sha’Ray Butler, competing in the 400m hurdles in the junior competition, finished 27th overall in the event, with a time of 1:07.37. Nicole Leach of UCLA won the finals of the event with a time of 55.63 seconds.
