Egor Agafonov Named Academic All-American

University of Kansas junior Egor Agafonov was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America men’s track and field/cross country second team Tuesday. An economics major, Agafonov carries a 3.58 GPA and was the 2007 NCAA national champion in the indoor weight throw.

In all, Agafonov enjoyed a banner year in 2007. He won two Big 12 Conference titles, set numerous meet records and earned All-America honors in both the weight throw and the hammer throw. During the indoor season, he threw a career-best 77-05.25 (23.60m) to win the indoor weight throw national title. He also repeated as the Big 12 indoor weight throw crown with a toss of 76-01 (23.19m).

The 2007 outdoor season was equally successful for Agafonov. He finished fourth in the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 229-02 (69.85m) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning the fourth All-America award of his career. He also won the hammer throw titles and set new meet records at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with a throw of 230-01 (70.14m) and NCAA Midwest Regionals, heaving the 16-pound implement 223-00 (67.97m).

His coach, Andy Kokhanovsky, was very proud of Agafonov’s accomplishments both in the throwing circle and in the classroom.

“This award is a great achievement for Egor,” Kokhanovsky said. “I am very proud of him today. It really is a great way to finish what has been a superb year on his part.”

Agafonov and the rest of the Jayhawk track and field team will resume competition early in December.
