EUGENE, Ore. –
On the fourth and final day of the 2011 U.S. Championships, two Jayhawks saw action Sunday at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. Mason Finley and Rebeka Stowe suited up once again in attempts to earn spots on the U.S. National Team for the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea on Aug. 27-Sept. 4.
To start the day, Mason Finley stepped into the shot put ring against several of the best throwers in the world. The Salida, Colo., native put together three strong throws in the preliminary round, with his second attempt of the day his best, a throw of 19.47 meters (63-10.50 ft.). He quickly moved into 11th place however the mark wouldn’t be enough to move him into the final round of throws. The day would be a success though, with Finley getting valuable experience going up against the top shot putters in the country. He will now attempt to qualify for the World University Games in Shenzen, China on August 12-23.
Rebeka Stowe was up next for the Jayhawks Sunday, running in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. On Friday, the Olathe, Kan., native finished fifth in the preliminary heat of the event, moving on to the finals with the 10th best time overall. In the final, Stowe ran one of her strongest races of the season, sticking with the front-runners for the majority of the race. She would go on to finish 11th with a time of 10:05.03, her best ever finish at the National Meet.
