Herrmann Out to Fast Start on Day Two of Olympic Swimming Trials

OMAHA, Neb. – Former Kansas swimmer Danielle Herrmann made a significant splash in her first Olympic Trials race Tuesday morning at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. The four-year KU standout from 2005-09 was leading her heat in the 100 breaststroke heading into the final lap, but finished third with a time of 1:12.87. Overall she placed 107th out of 153 total athletes competing in the event.
“She was out light and quick like she usually is but she may have been a little too aggressive on the front end,” said KU Head Coach Clark Campbell following the race. “She was in the fifth heat and was the first person to go under 33 seconds at the 50, but she hung on and had her second best time.”
Herrmann, who also is a volunteer assistant for KU during the regular season, was not one of the 16 swimmers to advance to the semifinals rounds later in the day, but she will have another chance to toe the blocks. Herrmann and two other of her Kansas counterparts will be in the pool for the qualifying heats of the 200 IM tomorrow morning.
“The nice thing about the 200 IM is that it is just 50’s of each stroke,” Coach Campbell explained. “So you tend not to get as fatigued as you do in 100’s of race because you are switching how your muscles work.”
The two other KU swimmers to compete with Herrmann in the event tomorrow will be junior Brooke Brull and incoming freshman Chelsie Miller. Miller already has one event under her belt, having finished with a 4:57.34 time in the 400 IM on Monday.
