Jayhawks Featured on Local Television Show

June 28, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior soccer player Jordyn Perdue and sophomore running back Toben Opurum joined KU’s sport nutritionist Randy Bird Monday morning to shoot an episode of Jayni’s Kitchen, a local television cooking show on Sunflower Broadband channel 6 in Lawrence.

The episode opens with Bird’s preparation of a strawberry banana smoothie. Perdue prepared a breakfast of a spinach and feta scramble, while Opurum cooked a lunch of sautéed chicken and pepper pitas. Bird finished the show with a dinner of chicken and spinach stir-fry salad with raspberries.

“The idea was thrown out in the Student-Athlete Welfare Committee,” said Bird, who also does monthly cooking demos for KU’s student-athletes. “The producer (Jacquelin Zammuto) of the show used to be one of our tutors, who ran the idea by me and we ran it by Jayni’s Kitchen and they liked it.”

The episode will debut Tues., Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m., with a repeat at 10:30 p.m. Some or all of the recipes will appear in the Lawrence Journal World’s GO Magazine Monday, Aug. 30.
