Reesing And Rivera Named To Preseason Watch Lists On Monday

June 30, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, while Jayhawk linebacker Mike Rivera was tabbed to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, it was announced by the Maxwell Football Club on Monday.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagle great. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame.

Seventy-five players were named to both preseason watch lists.

Reesing, a junior-to-be from Austin, Texas, set 21 school records a year ago, including season marks for passing yards (3,486) and touchdowns (33), career records for touchdown passes (36) and 300-yard passing games (five) and a game mark for touchdown passes in a game (six vs. Nebraska). Reesing was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection in 2007

Rivera, a senior-to-be from Shawnee Mission, Kan., recorded 96 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss from his outside linebacker position last season. He earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors in each of the last two seasons.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced in early November and three finalists for each award will be announced November 25th. The winners of the 2008 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 6, 2009.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2008 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.

Other Jayhawks on announced preseason watch lists include defensive ends Russell Brorsen and John Larson (Lott Trophy), center Ryan Cantrell (Rimington Trophy), and linebacker Joe Mortensen (Nagurski and Lombardi Awards).
