July 11, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Kansas junior punter/place kicker Ron Doherty has been named to the Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List by the Augusta Sports Council. The council released its list of 25 student-athletes who are up for the award, which honors the nation’s top collegiate punter.

Doherty, a 5-foot-11 ½, 215-pound punter/place kicker from Klein, Texas, finished the 2011 season third in the Big 12 and 27th in the country with a 42.8 punting average. He recorded a season-long punt of 62 yards in the season finale against Missouri and had 13 punts of 50 yards or more during the season. He also excelled at pinning opponents deep in their own territory, dropping 15 of his punts inside the 20-yard line.

In his first full season as the team’s punter in 2011, Doherty earned All-Big 12 honorable mention from the Associated Press and as well as the conference’s coaches. He was also tabbed third team all-conference on the Phil Steele midseason awards list.

Given annually to the top punter in college football, the Ray Guy Award will be presented at The Home Depot College Football Awards show, which airs Thursday, Dec. 6 on ESPN. The complete list of candidates will be released on Oct. 26, with the list getting narrowed down to 10 semi-finalists on Nov. 9. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists, to be announced on Nov. 19.

After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation’s top punter.

Kansas football will open the 2012 season at home against South Dakota State on Sept. 1.
