July 14, 2006

LAWRENCE, KAN. –

Junior Annie Giangrosso birdied the final two holes and shot a final-round score of 69 to capture the Kansas Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championship in Independence, Mo. Giangrosso rallied in the final round to overtake Kansas State’s Halley Mireles, who entered the final round with a one-stroke lead over Giangrosso, to win the event by five strokes.

On the 18th hole, a 431-yard par five, Giangrosso nearly sank a 20-foot eagle putt after she successfully reached the green in two shots. She then tapped in for birdie. Mierles, who fired a final round of 75, knocked her ball into the water on her second shot and suffered a two-stroke penalty for a bogey.

Giangrosso and Mireles both fired opening-round scores of 74. In the second round, Giangrosso fired a 73 while Mireles shot a 72 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.

Also competing in the tournament was incoming freshman Sydney Wilson, who finished tied for 16th in the event after shooting 78-80-87 over the three days. The Lawrence High graduate found trouble on the eighth hole, her second-to-last hole of the tournament, knocking several balls out of bounds and eventually scoring an 11 on the hole.
