Jayhawks Excel During Day One at Kansas Amateur

LAWRENCE, KAN. –

Five Jayhawks from last year’s team are competing this week at the 97th Kansas Amateur in <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Topeka, Kan. Recently graduated Gary Woodland leads the event after the first day of play. Woodland, a native of Topkea, Kan., fired an opening-round 65 to secure a two-shot lead after the first day of play at the 300-player event.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The event takes place at both Shawnee Country Club and Topeka Country Club. The competitors play 36 holes of stroke play, followed by a matchup play tournament of the top 64 participants after stroke play has been completed. All five Jayhawks competed today at Shawnee Country Club.

Soon to be senior Joey Mundy fired an opening-round score of 71 to tie for 35th place. Junior Zach Pederson stands just one shot behind Mundy with an opening-round 72 and is tied for 45th. Patrick Roth and Barrett Martens both shot opening-day scores of 73 and are tied for 61st entering day two of play.

Several other former Jayhawks are competing in the event this week, most notably Luke Trammel who is tied for 22nd place. All five of the Jayhawks from last year’s NCAA Central Regional qualifying team are in line to make it to the match play portion of the event after round one.
