Softball Welcomes Record Turnout to HS Team Camp

July 18, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Record numbers turned out to learn from the Jayhawks during Kansas softball’s high school team camp, July 16-19.

Head coach Megan Smith and her staff at KU welcomed 10 additional area coaches to guide more than 70 high school players attending camp this week, a number that surpasses any other she’s seen as she approaches her fourth season in Lawrence.

“We’ve always had really good camp turn out since I’ve been here,” Smith said. “But this year has really been the best. We have fantastic numbers and that says a lot about the excitement about our program as well as our sport.”

Smith and her fellow camp instructors, which also includes past and present members of the Kansas softball team, evaluated campers as they took part in a skills showcase on Monday. Later Monday evening, campers were placed on competitive teams, where they will be coached by a collegiate level coach for the remainder of the week.

Sessions will focus on individual skills and team concepts necessary for success at the high school/collegiate level. Campers will work at their specific positions and are put through collegiate level hitting work-outs during the week.

Throughout the week, campers will also participate in a strength and conditioning session, have their swing video analyzed, learn recruiting rules and strategies and become familiar with collegiate academic standards.

The Jayhawks will host their final camp of the summer during a two-day pitchers and catchers clinic, July 19-20.
