Athletic Director Perkins Named To TIME Magazine Best Sports Executives List

July 21, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Athletic Director Lew Perkins has been named to TIME Magazine’s list of best sports executives. Perkins is the only college sports administrator to make the list of 35 individuals, which includes team owners, team managers, league commissioners and other executives from around the world.

The magazine’s website lists his positives as Kansas becoming the second school to ever win a men’s basketball title and a BCS bowl game in the same year as well as Perkins increasing the athletic department’s budget from $24 million to $55 million since his arrival in Kansas in the summer of 2003.

“It is a great honor to be included on this list,” Perkins said. “It is a reflection on the University of Kansas, Chancellor (Robert) Hemenway and all of our coaches and student-athletes.”

TIME is asking for votes on who is the best sports executive of the year on their website at http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/0,28757,1820667,00.html.

Among the leaders in the poll late Monday afternoon were Sir Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United; John Henry, principal owner of the Boston Red Sox; Danny Ainge, general manager of the Boston Celtics; Jerry Reese, general manager of the New York Giants, and Perkins.
