Horvath and Hommell, who competed together throughout most of the 2005-06 season, defeated teammates Elizaveta Avdeeva and Yuliana Svistun, 9-7, to take the doubles title from a field that consisted of 16 tandems from many of the nation’s top programs.
Earlier in the day, Hommell, who entered the singles tournament as one of its top four seeds, eliminated two Jayhawks on her way to earning a spot in the final. In her first match of the day, the Roswell, Ga., native beat Horvath, 6-2, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and then bested senior Stephanie Smith, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (13), to set up Monday’s championship tilt with Colleen Riley, who defeated Avdeeva in Sunday’s other semifinal.
The two are set to square off at noon on Monday at Robinson Courts in Lawrence.
