July 24, 2006
LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas junior Lauren Hommell fell one win shy of adding the singles title to her doubles championship that she captured on Sunday, dropping the final match of the ITA Summer Circuit Central Region Tournament, 6-2, 6-1, to Notre Dame’s Colleen Riley. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Hommell, who teamed with sophomore Edina Horvath to take first in the doubles bracket, had to defeat two of her teammates – junior Elizaveta Avdeeva and senior Stephanie Smith – over the weekend in order to advance to Monday’s singles title match.
Despite the defeat on Monday, the Jayhawk program produced an extremely strong showing at the weekend tournament, placing four of its athletes in the quarterfinals of the singles bracket and two of its doubles tandems in the doubles bracket final.
