Jayhawks Impressive At 2005 ITA Summer Circuit

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Four members of the University of Kansas tennis team participated in the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Summer Circuit, presented by the United States Tennis Association this past Saturday through Monday at Robinson tennis courts.

Sophomore Elizaveta Avdeeva advanced to the singles championship match before falling to Kali Krisik of Arkansas City, Kan., 6-7, 6-0, 1-0(7). After dropping her opening match, sophomore Stephanie Smith came back to win the backdraw portion of the singles bracket by defeating Denise Cockrell of Idaho St., 6-2, 6-1. Junior Ashley Filberth fell in the second round to Brianna Knue of Illinois, 6-1, 6-0 and junior Brittany Brown dropped a, 6-4, 6-4 decision to Maya Ristic of Kansas State.

In doubles action, Brown and Avdeeva teamed together and took second as the Jayhawk tandem lost to Krisik and Kara Hickey, 8-2. Filberth and Smith also fell to Krisik and Hickey, 8-3, in the second round.

Champions from this tournament gain wild cards into the Icy ITA Men’s and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in October, the first national tournaments of the 2005-06 collegiate tennis season.
