July 29, 2008

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. –

Kansas swimmers Danielle Herrmann and Ashley Leidigh completed their first day of competition at the U.S. Open Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Leidigh, a senior from Merriam, Kan., placed 35th in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:19.95. It was Leidigh’s fastest time in the event since her sophomore season.

Herrmann, a senior from Itasca, Ill., placed 46th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:47.21. Herrmann improved her best time from last season by nearly four seconds.

“We were really happy with Ashley and Danielle’s times today,” Kansas head swimming coach Clark Campbell said. “Both of them were more focused on their events later in the week, so their times today will only serve to give them confidence for the rest of the meet.”

Leidigh will compete in the 100-meter butterfly on Thursday, while Herrmann will participate in the 100 breaststroke Friday. Another Kansas swimmer, freshman Abigail Anderson, will compete in the 100 fly along with Leidigh.
