Aug. 1, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Players, coaches and staff of the Kansas soccer team report to campus Tuesday, Aug. 2 to kick-off the 2011 season. The team will begin the day with meetings to highlight schedules, rules and other information while the first official practice is scheduled for Wednesday morning. A second practice will be held later that afternoon and the team will continue with two-a-day practices for the first week.

In his 13th season, head coach Mark Francis returns seven starters, including top offensive threats senior Kortney Clifton and junior Whitney Berry. Clifton led KU with four goals in 2010 and Berry earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors.

The Jayhawks also welcome 11 newcomers to the roster, including Brittany King and Kaitlyn Stroud, who redshirted the 2010 season. Among the freshmen are Liana Salazar and Ingrid Vidal, who both played with the Colombian national soccer team this past summer in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Kansas will open the 2011 season with an exhibition game versus Butler on Sunday, Aug. 14 at 1 p.m at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. Following the match, fans can stick around as KU will be hosting a free 45-minute soccer clinic for children on the field.

The regular-season opener is slated for Friday, Aug. 19 when KU welcomes Tennessee for a 5 p.m. match in Lawrence.
