LAWRENCE, Kan. –

LeAnna Kemp was named the graduate assistant coach for the Kansas rowing team Monday.

Kemp joins the rowing staff after spending the 2010-11 season as a volunteer assistant for the Jayhawk rowing team, where she worked with the novice group. Her duties as graduate assistant will include assisting in recruiting correspondence, teaching the incoming novice the sport of rowing and general administrative duties in the office.

A former KU rower from 2002-2005, Kemp earned the “Essence of a Jayhawk” Award during her junior year. She was also named a Jayhawk Scholar during her sophomore and junior years.

“She’s very enthusiastic and brings a lot of excitement and enthusiasm, especially with our freshmen, who she’s mainly going to work with,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “Her experience as a coxswain is really going to help coach our young girls.”

The Kansas City, Mo., native graduated in 2005 from KU with a degree in journalism. After graduating from KU, Kemp spent four years in Jacksonville, Fla., working on the Young Life staff, a non-profit Christian ministry.

While in Jacksonville, she also spent time as a rowing volunteer assistant at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville. During her time there, she worked with middle school-aged girls.

Kemp is currently working on her master’s degree in education with a concentration in physical education.
