Before its regular-season opener next week, the University of Kansas soccer team will welcome Butler on Sunday, Aug. 14 for an exhibition match beginning at 1 p.m. at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. Children can stick around after the game as the Jayhawks will host a free 45-minute soccer clinic immediately after the match.

In his 13th season, head coach Mark Francis returns seven starters and 12 letterwinners, including top offensive threats senior Kortney Clifton and junior Whitney Berry. Clifton led KU with four goals and nine points in 2010 and Berry (three goals, nine points) earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors. Junior Kat Liebetrau is back between the posts for Kansas having started all 19 matches last season and leading the Big 12 Conference with 5.95 saves per game.

The Jayhawks will have a relatively new look this season as two 2010 redshirt student-athletes help make up a group of 11 newcomers, including Liana Salazar and Ingrid Vidal, who both played with the Colombian national soccer team this past summer in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Bulldogs finished 9-11 overall in 2010, including 6-2 during conference play to win the Horizon League regular-season title. Butler returns nine of its top 11 scorers in addition to five players who garnered All-Horizon League recognition last year. Junior Katie Griswold led Butler with 20 points and nine goals a year ago, while sophomore Jackie Hafele also returns after leading the team with five assists to go along with 11 points. Butler is without its top goalkeeper from 2010 but has sophomore Julie Burton, who appeared in five matches as a freshman.
