KU's Stuckey Named To Bednarik Watch List

Aug. 13, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football standout Darrell Stuckey has been named to a national trophy watch list for the third time this preseason. Stuckey was tabbed to the Chuck Bednarik Defensive Player of the Year list on Thursday.

Earlier this summer Stuckey was named to the watch lists for the Jim Thorpe Award – given to the nation’s top defensive back, and the Lott Trophy – which recognizes a defensive player for excellence on and off the field. In addition, Stuckey is an All-State AFCA Good Works Team Nominee.

The Kansas City, Kan. senior is one of 55 players on the Bednarik list and one of just four safeties, along with Eric Berry of Tennessee, Morgan Burnett of Georgia Tech and Taylor Mays of USC.

Stuckey, who was an All-Big 12 selection a year ago and a preseason All-Big 12 pick by the media this season, will be a third-year starter in the Jayhawk secondary in 2009. He enters the year with 202 career tackles and seven interceptions after recording 98 stops and five pickoffs a year ago.

The Bednarik Award is named after the former University of Penn and Philadelphia Eagles standout, who is enshrined in both the college and professional football halls of fame.
