Kansas Soccer Earns Pre-Season Ranking

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Kansas soccer team enters the 2007 season as a nationally ranked team in the Soccer Buzz Pre-Season Poll, which was released Tuesday by the publication. The Jayhawks will open the season as the 26th-ranked team in the country, marking the fifth-straight year that KU has been ranked in a national poll at some point during the season. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The Jayhawks are one of five Big 12 teams to be ranked in the pre-season poll, joining Texas A&M (No. 5), <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Texas (No. 9), Colorado (No. 21) and OklahomaState (No. 29). Defending national champion North Carolina opens the season as the top-ranked school.

KU is also ranked fifth in the Central Region, which includes 69 schools from the Big 12, SEC West, Conference USA and other conferences.

Last season, the Jayhawks were ranked as high as 18th in the country following a 4-1 start, which included a victory over then-No. 12 Duke. Seven of KU’s 2007 opponents were also ranked in the pre-season top 30.

Kansas will travel to the University of Hawaii for its season opener on Aug. 31 in Honolulu.
