Kansas Cross Country Announces 2008 Schedule

Aug. 15, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas cross country head coach Stanley Redwine has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2008 season, which includes five meets in Big 12 territory.

“The schedule is really competitive,” Redwine said. “It gives the athletes an opportunity to have the best competition that they possibly can. It’s great, thanks to Lew (Perkins) and Chris (Howard), that we’re able to put together such a great schedule.”

The Jayhawks begin the season on Aug. 30 by hosting the Bob Timmons Classic at Rim Rock Farm. The men and women have swept their home meet the past three seasons, and they look to make it four in a row in 2008.

“Our cross country meet is our one and only home cross country event,” Redwine said. “We would love the fans to come and watch us race. We understand that it’s early in the season for the team, but it’s a good time for them to come see the Jayhawks compete.”

Two weeks later, Sept. 13, KU crosses the border for the Missouri Cross Country Challenge in Columbia, Mo. The Jayhawks will then travel to Stillwater, Okla., Oct. 4, for the OSU Cowboy Jamboree. On Oct. 18, KU will get a taste of the NCAA Championships atmosphere when it heads to Terre Haute, Ind., for ISU Pre-Nationals.

It’s then on to the postseason for the Jayhawks, who will travel to Ames, Iowa for the Big 12 Championships Nov. 1. After that it’s a return trip to Stillwater for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, set for Nov. 15. The NCAA Championships will take place Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind.

The KU men return five letterwinners in 2008, while the women bring back nine letterwinners. The experience is there, so it’s up to the athletes to step up and make good things happen this season.

“We have to be hitting on all cylinders,” Redwine said. “I think in order for that to happen, we have to have good leadership and we need everyone else to do their job.”
