Kansas Releases 2009 Football Schedule

LAWRENCE, Kan. – First-time meetings with four non-conference opponents highlight the 2009 Kansas football schedule which was announced on Friday.
The Jayhawks will face Northern Colorado, Texas-El Paso, Duke and Southern Mississippi for the first time on the gridiron in addition to the annual eight-game Big 12 schedule.
Kansas will play four contests at home in the first five games of the season. The Jayhawks will open the year hosting Northern Colorado on Sept. 5 before playing its only road game until Oct. 17 when the Jayhawks travel to Texas-El Paso on Sept. 12.
Kansas will then host three straight home games against Duke on Sept. 19, Southern Mississippi on Sept. 26 and after a bye week, open Big 12 Conference play hosting Iowa State on Oct. 10.
Other home games include matchups with Oklahoma on Oct. 24, Nebraska on Nov. 14 and Missouri on Nov. 28. The Jayhawks will travel to Colorado, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Texas during the season.
KU’s matchup with UTEP will be its first against a Conference USA opponent since defeating Houston in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl. Southern Mississippi is also a member of Conference USA.
The game against Duke will be the first against an Atlantic Coast Conference team since beating Virginia Tech in the 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl. KU’s last two games against the league have been in bowl games as the Jayhawks played North Carolina State in the 2003 Tangerine Bowl.
The last time KU met an ACC foe in the regular season was the 1993 season-opener against Florida State at the Kickoff Classic in East Rutherford, N.J.
Schedule Notable – KU will open its season at home for the seventh straight season… KU will play back-to-back home games just once during the year, hosting Duke and Southern Mississippi in consecutive weeks in September… KU will play consecutive road games (at Texas Tech and at Kansas State) for the first time since visits to Colorado and Texas A&M in back-to-back games in October of 2007… KU will finish the regular season against Missouri for the fourth straight season.
