Aug. 16, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Fans can preview the 2006 Kansas volleyball team when the Jayhawks open the season with a scrimmage against KU alumni Saturday (Aug. 19) at 7 p.m. Admission to the event at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center is free.

The Jayhawks return eight veterans and welcome eight newcomers that will add depth to the 2006 roster. Returning starters include 2006 Preseason All-Big 12 selection Emily Brown (junior) and senior outside hitter Jana Correa. Junior Natalie Uhart, the 2006 Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, was recently granted an additional year of eligibility at KU after transferring from Long Beach State last year.

KU, picked to finish seventh in the league in 2006, made its third-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and ended the season 15-15 overall. Head coach Ray Bechard, in his ninth season with the Jayhawks, is 13 victories away from becoming the winningest volleyball coach in KU history.

Saturday’s alumni roster will include KU standouts Paula Caten (2004-05), Danielle Geronymo (1999-2000), Abbie Jacobson (2000-03), Molly LaMere (1998-01), Laura Rohde (1995-98), Molly Scavuzzo (2000-02), Kylie Thomas (1999-2002) and tentatively, Josi Lima (2002-05).

Any additional alumni wishing to participate in the scrimmage or coach are invited to contact KU assistant coaches Christi Posey (785-864-7959) or Jill Jones Stucky (785-864-3921).
