New Tackle Leader Again

For the fifth straight season Kansas will have a different player lead the team in tackles as the leaders from each of the previous four seasons have moved on. Nick Reid led the team in 2005 and then last year’s starting linebackers all led the team in tackles for one season during their KU careers as Mike Rivera led in 2006, Joe Mortensen in 2007 and James Holt in 2008. Prior to that stretch, Reid led the team in three consecutive seasons from 2003-05.

National Award Lists Continue

Through August 14 at least 10 national award watch lists were announced and the Jayhawks fared well with several players earning multiple mentions. KU players who have received attention include wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe, wide receiver Kerry Meier, quarterback Todd Reesing, running back Jake Sharp and safety Darrell Stuckey. There are still a number of watch lists which will be released throughout August. In addition, players can be added to watch lists as the season progresses.

Top Five Opponents

This year Kansas faces two opponents, who most listings rank in the top three in the country this preseason in Texas and Oklahoma. Playing top-five opponents is nothing new to the Jayhawks recently. In fact KU has met two top-five teams in each of the last two seasons. Last year KU played both Oklahoma and Texas, which were each ranked No. 4 by the Associated Press at game time. In the 2007 season KU played consecutive games against No. 4 Missouri and No. 5 Virginia Tech, beating the Hokies in the Orange Bowl.

Here is a look at KU’s victories against AP top five teams all-time:

1960 – W 23-7 at No. 1 Missouri

1974 – W 28-10 vs. No. 5 Texas A&M

1984 – W 28-11 vs. No. 2 Oklahoma

1995 – W 40-24 at No. 4 Colorado

2007 – W 24-21 vs. No. 5 Virginia Tech (2008 Orange Bowl)
