Fans got to see a preview of the 2007 Kansas volleyball team tonight as the Jayhawks opened the 2007 season with a scrimmage against KU alumni at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. KU was victorious as it defeated the alumni 3-0 (31-29, 30-27, 30-28).
Senior outside hitter Emily Brown led the Jayhawks with 11 kills on the night. Sophomore Brittany Williams followed with eight, while newcomers Jenna Kaiser and Natalie Uhart each chipped in seven kills a piece.
Katie Martincich had a team-high 21 assists and Brown pitched in 20 of her own. Martincich also had a great showing on defense leading KU with 14 digs.
As team, the Jayhawks tallied 14 total blocks compared to just 8 for the alumni. Caitlin Mahoney and Paige Mazour each got up for three total blocks.
“I thought we played really well in in-game situations tonight,” said KU’s head coach Ray Bechard. “We kept our composure when the game was close. We also did a good job of coming away with the big points and our blocking was very strong tonight.”
For the alumni, 2006 graduate Jana Correa led her squad with 14 kills, while Laura Rohde Curry had a game-high 29 set assists.
Kansas heads into its first match next weekend in the Oregon Invitational. The Jayhawks will go up against Cal St.-Bakersfield on Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. before taking on Idaho State and Oregon the following day.
