LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Fans will have an opportunity to preview the 2009 Kansas volleyball team when the Jayhawks play an exhibition scrimmage against KU alumni Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. Admission to the event at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center is free.

Returning for the Jayhawks, who finished 13-16 last season, are five starters, plus their libero, and 11 letterwinners overall. Four incoming freshmen round out the 2009 roster.

Among the returnees are KU’s top offensive threat from a year ago, junior Karina Garlington, who was fifth in the Big 12 with 3.66 kps, and All-Big 12 Freshman Team selection, setter Nicole Tate. Four seniors will be entering their final seasons in the Crimson and Blue including Melissa Grieb, Katie Martincich, Paige Mazour and Brittany Williams.

Head coach Ray Bechard enters his 11th season with the Jayhawks as the program’s all-time winningest coach. He has taken KU to three NCAA appearances (2003-05) and has brought renewed interest in the Jayhawk program as KU volleyball annually ranks in the nation’s top 50 attendance leaders.

Saturday’s alumni roster has not yet been determined. Past participants have included KU standouts such as Nancy Bell (1997-2000), Emily Brown (2004-07), Paula Caten (2004-05), Jill Dorsey (2001-04), Danielle Geronymo (1999-2000), Abbie Jacobsen (2000-03), Molly Lamere (1998-01), Molly Scavuzzo (2000-02), Ashley Michaels (2001-04) and others.

Any additional alumni wishing to participate in the scrimmage are invited to contact KU assistant coach Christi Posey (785-864-7959).
