Volleyball Sweeps Alumni in Exhibition

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The University of Kansas volleyball team opened its 2005 season with an exhibition win over KU Alumni Saturday night at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. Despite a great effort by the alumni, Kansas prevailed in three games, 30-25, 30-24 and 30-26, before playing a game four voluntarily, 30-22.

Junior Jana Correa paced the Jayhawks with 13 kills and added nine digs in the match. Senior Paula Caten added 11 kills while freshman middle blocker Savannah Noyes was impressive in her debut, totaling 11 kills on a .562 attack percentage and three blocks.

Sophomore Emily Brown and redshirt freshman Kristin Buehler each added seven kills and senior three-time All-Big 12 selection Josi Lima rounded out the top scorers with six kills, four blocks and four service aces. Junior Jamie Mathewson and Dani Wittman led the KU defense with 10 digs apiece while seven Jayhawks added four or more in the effort.

Freshman setter Katie Martincich led KU with 31 assists while junior Andi Rozum added 24 in the first two games. The Jayhawks totaled 10.0 blocks and 18 aces in the victory, but made 21 service errors, including four in game-point situations.

Former manager Nic Slayton led the alumni with 14 kills on a .462 attack percentage while Nancy Bell Dorsey was close behind with eight kills, four digs and two aces. Lawrence High School head volleyball coach Molly LaMere led the alumni with 17 assists and added seven digs while Jennifer Kraft, the 2002 Big 12 Defensive Specialist of the Year, paced all players with 17 digs.

KU opens its regular season Friday, Aug. 26, when it hosts the State Farm Jayhawk Classic. The Jayhawks will face off against Alabama at 7 p.m.
