Lawrence, Kan. –

The University of Kansas soccer team used two first half goals to defeat Drake, 2-1, in an exhibition match on Saturday afternoon at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. KU will open its regular season on Friday, Aug. 26, against Michigan.

“There were some good things for the first time out,” commented head coach Mark Francis “The freshmen class did very well, everybody came in and contributed.”

Caroline Smith got the Jayhawks on the board eight minutes into the match. Smith took the rebound off a Jessica Smith shot that hit the left post and pushed it over the Drake goalkeeper.

Kansas put its second tally on the board with 2:39 remaining in the first half. Freshman Sara Rogers beat DU’s keeper, Erin Jarvis, from five-yards out. Jenifer Thomas and Lacey Novak were both credited with assists on Rogers’ goal.

Colleen Quinn held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the first half as KU out-shot DU, 9-5, in the first 45-minutes of play. Freshman Julie Hanley replaced Quinn in goal to start the second half.

The second half was scoreless until Drake’s Sarah Foote kicked the ball over Hanley’s head from 20-yards out to put DU on the board. Kansas held on in the remaining 16-minutes and came away with a 2-1 victory.

The Jayhawks recorded 18-shots in the game, including eight on goal. Nicole Cauzillo and Kimberly Karfonta led KU with two shots on goal. Quinn and Hanley each recorded one save during the match.

The Jayhawks regular-season opener against the Wolverines on Friday will kick off at 5 p.m. at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
