KU Volleyball Crimson and Blue Scrimmage Scheduled For Saturday

Aug. 20, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas volleyball will take the court for the first time this season when it holds an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. The event is free to the public.

Kansas, which finished 16-14 overall last season, welcomes back nine letterwinners. Senior Preseason All-Big 12 Team selection Karina Garlington is one of four returning starters, along with the team’s top offensive threat from 2009 in junior Allison Mayfield.

The Jayhawks also welcome eight talented newcomers in a recruiting class ranked No. 26 by PrepVolleyball.com. The class includes one player ranked in the top 50 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com (Kara Wehrs) and an Evelyn Gates Award honoree, given to the top female volleyball player in the Kansas City area, in Marianne Beal.

Several former Jayhawks will also be attending the event as part of an alumni weekend.

KU opens the 2010 regular season at Creighton’s Bluejay Invitational, Aug. 27-28, in Omaha, Neb.
