Kansas Soccer Blows Past Creighton In Exhibition Match

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Junior forward Jessica Smith scored a pair of goals to highlight a five-goal first half outburst as the University of Kansas women’s soccer team defeated Creighton, 6-1, in an exhibition match on Saturday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

Jessica Smith got the Jayhawks on the board for the first time at the 7:55 mark of the first half when she broke in alone to beat Creighton goalkeeper Jamie Herrmann. Sophomore Holly Gault delivered the next goal for KU as she drove in from her defensive position and ripped a shot into the back of the net. Gault’s goal gave the team a 2-0 lead in the game’s 16th minute. Jessica Smith added her second goal of the match during the 33rd minute, when she took a pass from Amy Geha and broke away to beat the goalkeeper. Caroline Smith and Rachel Gilfillan also scored in the first period for the Jayhawks, who took a 5-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, sophomore Lacey Novak took a pass from Kelsey Archuleta and fired a shot past the keeper to give the Jayhawks their sixth and final goal of the match. Crieghton spoiled the Kansas shutout in the 83rd minute, when Chelsea Mackenzie fired a high arching shot that eluded KU goalkeeper Erin Ferguson.

For the match, KU outshot Creighton 15-6 and collected five more corner kicks.

Kansas Soccer will begin the 2004 regular season next weekend it they travels to Las Vegas, Nev., on Aug. 28 to take on UNLV and to Provo, Utah, to battle BYU on Aug 30.
