Team Crimson edged team Blue in three closely contested sets during Kansas volleyball’s Crimson and Blue intrasquad scrimmage Saturday evening. Crimson won by scores of 21-25, 25-21 and 27-25.

Junior Allison Mayfield led all players with 15 kills, including eight in the opening frame despite her side’s 25-21 defeat. She also added three service aces in the effort. Senior Karina Garlington and freshman Amy Wehrs finished with double digit kills contributing 12 each.

On defense, senior defensive specialist Mel Townsend recorded a match-best 16 digs. Freshman Brianne Riley was close behind with 13 digs, while senior Melissa Manda had 11. The back row also received help from freshman Marianne Beal. The 6-0 outside hitter collected a team-high five total blocks.

After falling in set one, team Crimson came back to claim the second set behind a .367 attack percentage. In the third and final set, Crimson trailed 24-22 but battled back to knot the score at 25-all with kills from sophomore Tayler Tolefree and Garlington along with two Blue errors. Tolefree gave Crimson point 26 before another Blue attack error finished the match.

Seven freshmen, two redshirt freshmen and a sophomore transfer made their KU debuts during the scrimmage.

“We tried to put as many players in game-like situations as we could tonight,” said 13th year head coach Ray Bechard. “I think it is real important to get the group in front of a crowd to get some of those nerves out of the way. I thought our organization was good. I thought we had some good moments and I’m excited (for the season to get underway).”

The Jayhawks open the 2010 regular season versus Lipscomb in Omaha, Neb., on Friday, Aug. 27 at 4:30 p.m. as part of the Bluejay Invitational hosted by Creighton.
