Jayhawks Down Alumni, 3-0, in Volleyball Exhibition

Kansas volleyball stepped onto the court for the first time in 2009, as it took on the KU alumni team in an exhibition match at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center here Saturday evening. The Jayhawks defeated the alumni 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-13).

Junior Karina Garlington led the team with nine kills, followed by senior Brittany Williams who contributed seven. The Jayhawks exhibited sharp defense, picking up 40 total digs. Junior libero Melissa Manda led with 10, while Nicole Tate and Allison Mayfield added seven apiece.

Tate notched 30 assists throughout the contest, while also adding two kills.

As a team, the Jayhawks tallied 37 kills, as opposed to 24 for the alumni. KU also dominated in blocks, leading the Alumni 7-1.

“We had three main goals tonight,” said head KU volleyball coach Ray Bechard. “We wanted to do well in hitting, serving and passing and I think we hit all three goals. I really like where we’re at as a team.”

2008 graduate Savannah Noyes led the Alumni squad with six kills. Emily Brown added five kills and two service aces, while Abbie Jacobsen tallied five kills, two digs and one block.

Leading the defensive effort for the Alumni was Jana Correa, who dug up 10 balls in the scrimmage. Jill Dorsey was also busy in backcourt, as she tallied nine digs. Molly LeMere served as the primary setter, leading her offense with 13 assists.

Kansas officially kicks off its 2009 season with the Middle Tennessee State Tournament on Aug. 28-29 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Jayhawks will take on MTSU, Xavier and Murray State.
