LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer played an intrasquad match in preparation for Friday’s upcoming season-opener, Sunday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex, with the Blue team defeating the White team 4-1.

The Blue team got a significant boost from forward Whitney Berry in the match. Berry had an especially strong showing, scoring once and assisting in the rest of Blue’s goals.

Emily Cressy, who split time on both the Blue and White teams, scored once for Blue and notched an assist for White.

“We had a lot of people play well today and put themselves in a position to be starting for us,” said head coach Mark Francis. “We got what we wanted out of the scrimmage.”

White struck first when freshman Caroline Kastor played a ball off of an Emily Cressy corner kick in just the seventh minute.

Later in the first half, Erin Lewis tied the game up pushing a ball straight past goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud.

The two teams kicked the intensity up a notch in the second half.

“I thought in the first 30 minutes we didn’t do a great job of connecting but we did a better job in the second and third periods.” Francis said. “After we talked about it at halftime, we did a better job of creating scoring chances and playing simpler.”

The second half belonged to Berry. She opened the half by connecting on a cross from Cressy to give the Blue team the 2-1 lead. Just a few minutes later, Cressy flicked in a ball from Berry, making the score 3-1.

Kelsey Clifton followed a rebound from Berry for a goal in the 50th minute to add an insurance goal for Blue.

The 2010 season opens Friday, Aug. 27, with KU hosting Eastern Kentucky. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m., at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
