Aug. 23, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas cross country head coach Stanley Redwine has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Colby Wissel (Kearney, Neb.), Mica Land (Wichita, Kan.) and Cortney Jacobs (Atlantic, Iowa) will join the Jayhawk cross country and track and field programs for the 2004-05 academic year.

Wissel currently attends Kearney High School, where he earned the title of 2003 Nebraska State Cross Country Champion earlier this month. Wissel posted the eighth-best senior mile time in the United States (4:14.27) and the sixth-best senior two mile time in the United States (9:06.29). In addition, Wissel won the individual championship title at the 2003 Rim Rock cross country meet and the two-mile championship at the 2003 Kansas Relays.

Land attends Andover High School where she has posted personal-best times of 5:10.52 in the mile and 2:19.84 in the 800m. Land won the 2003 Kansas 4A 800m individual title and finished second in the Kansas 4A 3200m championship.

Jacobs, a senior at Atlantic High School, won the 2003 Iowa 2A state championship in the 200m and 400m. Jacobs holds personal-best times of 55.52 in the 400m and 24.80 in the 200m.

“We are definitely excited about our recruits” Redwine said. “It’s an honor for what our teams have done in the past because we are getting a better quality of athlete now. When we talk about Colby Wissel, we are talking about one of the best in the nation. We are definitely excited to have him and he chose us over some very good schools. I have seen Cortney Jacobs run and she is a great athlete. Cortney and Mica will both be great competitors for KU and will be a great additions to the team. I believe all of them will come in and make immediate impacts to the team and we are looking forward to getting them here.” (11/17/03)
