July 14, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Relays meet director Tim Weaver has been selected as the head manager of the USA Men’s Team for the 2004 Team Athletics Challenge in Munich, Germany.

“It is a privilege to again work with the U.S. National Team and help these amazing athletes prepare for the Olympic Games,” said Weaver. “These are the best athletes in the United States, our national champions are getting ready to go on and enjoy the spotlight in Athens. To lead this group into Munich to take on the best from France and Germany is a tremendous honor.”

The meet, August 8th in the Munich Olympic Stadium, will feature the best athletes from the United States, Germany and France. This team scored competition serves as the final tune-up for the U.S. Olympic team before the Athens games.

Weaver, meet director of the Kansas Relays and architect of its return to national prominence, has been a part of the KU track & field program since serving as a volunteer coach in 1995. He also directs Kansas’s home cross country and indoor track meets, including the Rim Rock Farm Classic. The 2004 Kansas Relays set a new high mark for participants and teams, drawing big crowds and breaking 16 meet records over the weekend.

“I think that the choice to have the Kansas Relays Meet Director serve in a position such as this is a testament to the level of excellence that the meet has regained in recent years. This appointment is a compliment I share with the athletes, coaches, volunteers, administrators and sponsors who have played such a major role in our recent successes.”

Weaver was the Head Manager of the men’s team that won the 2003 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England. The U.S. Team won a total of 17 medals at the championships, including a record ten gold medals. This was the second-best performance ever by the United States at an Indoor World Championship.
