March 27, 2004

Lawrence, Kan. – Dealing with windy conditions, the University of Texas rowing team defeated Kansas in four out of five races Saturday on the Kansas River. The ‘Hawks lone victory came in the 1st Novice 8 race and saw the Jayhawks edge the Longhorns by 17 seconds with a time of 8:20.0. The Crimson and Blue raced with one entry in each event including the Varsity 4, 1st and 2nd Varsity 8, and the 1st and 2nd Novice 8 boats.

Texas went on to win four races including the Varsity 4, the 1st and 2nd Varsity 8 and the 2nd Novice 8 races. The final competition of the day was the 1st Varsity 8 race in which Texas was able to pull ahead of the Jayhawks and win the race by 35 seconds, with a time of 7:20.7. The 2nd Varsity 8 boat from Kansas finished 32 seconds behind the ‘Horns and the Kansas 2nd Novice 8 boat was defeated by 20 seconds. Though a Novice 4 race was scheduled, rowing officials cancelled the race due to the windy conditions.

“The course was really challenging out there today with the wind blowing as much as it was,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “I was really pleased with how our 1st Novice 8 boat dealt with the tough conditions today and we were pleased to see them pick up the win. The water was really challenging today, but I feel that we raced pretty hard for our first race of the season.”

The ‘Hawks next competition is a home regatta on April 3 against Tulsa and Drake.
