Rowers Win Kansas Cup

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas rowing team earned its sixth straight Kansas Cup victory, defeating the Kansas State Wildcats by a score of 18-1 on Saturday, at the Kansas River. The highlight for the Jayhawks came in the 1st Varsity 8 race that saw KU defeat both Kansas State and the University of Cincinnati with a time of 6:16.3. The three-team regatta included 1st and 2nd Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and 1st and 2nd Novice 8 competition, with Kansas entering one boat in each of the five races.
The Jayhawks 1st Novice 8 boat continued their strong spring season earning a 13-second victory over Kansas State, with a time of 6:31.4. Though Cincinnati edged the ‘Hawks by 2.3 seconds in 2nd Varsity 8 competition, KU earned a second place finish and a victory over Kansas State, giving the Jayhawks five points in Kansas Cup standings. The Wildcats lone victory came in the 2nd Novice 8 race, as they earned a nine-second victory over the Jayhawks. In Varsity 4 competition, Cincinnati earned a six-second victory over the Jayhawks with a time of 7:38.4.
Following the competition, Kansas was awarded the Kansas Cup by KU Director of Athletics, Lew Perkins.
“We are pretty excited about how we raced today,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “We have really been working hard all season and we have tried to get stronger and more powerful each race. I was really happy with our effort today from the entire team. Every year we want to put together a strong team and when you can do that and earn a victory over a Big 12 rival, it is just the icing on the cake.”
The Kansas Cup was the third and final home regatta for the team this season. The ‘Hawks next competition is the Knecht Cup on April 17-18 in Camden, NJ.
