St. Paul, Minn. – The University of Kansas rowing team was swept by the University of Minnesota in five races on Saturday at a three-team regatta that also included Southern Methodist University. The Golden Gophers earned victories over Kansas in the 1st and 2nd Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and the 1st and 2nd Novice races.

In 1st Varsity 8 competition, Minnesota won the race with a time of 7:19.3, Kansas followed in second at 7:30.1, while SMU finished third with a time of 7:37.3. The Kansas Varsity 4 boat finished in fourth with a time of 9:09.2. The Jayhawks lost by 18 seconds with 7:50.3 finish in the 2nd Varsity 8 race.

The Jayhawk 1st Novice 8 boat lost its first race this spring season as Minnesota defeated the ‘Hawks by 11 seconds with a time of 7:34.9.

“I think that today was a good learning experience for our team against some very quality competition,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “Our team will use this experience next week when we go up against a strong Texas team and a solid Kansas State team. The 1st Varsity 8 race was very close and we were leading for a while, but in the end, Minnesota was just a lot stronger than we were.”

The ‘Hawks next competition is the Big 12 Championships against Texas and Kansas State on May 3 in Manhattan, Kan.
