KU 1st Novice 8 Boat Sweeps Competition

Oak Ridge, Tenn. – After winning its first two races on Saturday, KU’s 1st Novice 8 crew took home a gold medal on Sunday at the South-Central Regionals in Oak Ridge, Tenn. With a time of 7:05.3, KU defeated second place Ohio State by four seconds to win the 1st Novice 8 Grand Final. The victory caps off a sucessful spring season for KU’s 1st Novice 8 boat, as that particular boat only lost one race the entire season.

The Jayhawks’ 1st Varsity 8 boat finished sixth in the Petite Final, with a time of 7:05.4, good for seventh in the Central Region. Kansas’ 2nd Varsity 8 notched third place in its C Final with a time of 7:18.2, four seconds behind first place Miami. The Kansas Varsity 4 boat finished fifth in the Varsity 4 C Final with an 8:36.0 time.

As a team, the ‘Hawks finished eighth in the Central Region and 12th overall with 189 points. Virginia won the entire event with 404 points, while Ohio State won the Central Region with 391 points. Fellow Big 12 rowing program Texas earned third in the South Region with 252 points, while Kansas State finished 11th in the Central Region with 110.

This weekend’s events marked the end of the 2004 spring season for the Kansas rowing team.
