Three Women's Golfers Named To First Team Academic All-Big 12

Lawrence, Kan.- – Three members of the women’s golf team were named to the 2004 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the Big 12 Conference announced Tuesday. First team members include senior Jennifer Bawanan, and sophomores Chelsey Pryor and Meredith Winkelmann.

Bawanan, a communications studies major, has been named Academic All-Big 12 three times. The Modesto, Calif., native has a season average of 79.95 strokes in 24 rounds of action. Bawanan shot a season-best 233 at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Invitational and the Mountain View Collegiate.

This is a first time honor for both Pryor and Winkelmann. Pryor, also a communications studies major, has led the team in four of the Jayhawks’ 10 tournaments this season. The Washington, Pa., native has averaged 78.20 strokes to lead the team this season. Pryor had a career-best finish as she tied for 10th place at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic after shooting 229. Winkelmann, a business administration major, has averaged 83.44 strokes in 18 rounds of action this season. The St. Louis, Mo., native finished with a career-best score of 248 at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. Winkelmann also had a career-best finish as she tied for 45th place at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. FReshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.

The Jayhawks will be back in action April 23-25 as they compete in the Big 12 Championships. The first of three rounds will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Pebble Creek Country Club in College Station, Texas.
